Balenciaga and art

The essential influences behind Cristóbal Balenciaga's creativity form the springboard for teaching students about the interaction and dialogue which sometimes occurs between clothing and art.
Through the couturier's creations and the inspirations he drew on, we take a closer look at the work of well-known artists and artistic and aesthetic movements from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The central theme of this activity is Cristóbal Balenciaga's technical mastery. Students learn about the constructive development and experimentation the couturier used in his creations.
The garments on show are detailed and analysed alongside reproductions of Balenciaga’s patterns to give a better understanding of his innovations.

Cristóbal Balenciaga achieved what is without a doubt one of the greatest contributions to the history of women’s clothing: the introduction of new silhouettes.
Students will discover the models with fluid and curved lines and surprising volumes by the couturier, which broke away from established forms.

NEW

Haute Couture, garments made by hand, crafted using exclusive and exquisite materials, can be considered, from their outset, as the highest expression of a non-perishable fashion. In these times when slow fashion is gaining strength, this visit proposes a return to earlier concepts, still valid today, to reflect on the fast, seasonal and mass consumption of today’s fashion.
