Rickard Lindqvist and the Kinetic System

Rickard Lindqvist will introduce the so-called kinetic system, a method seeking to break away from the usual conception of design, basing it on the understanding of body movement and pattern design as two elements which must respond and relate to one another.

Lugar: Ruiz Balerdi Hall, Kutxa Kultur, en 4th floor, Tabakalera, Donostia-San Sebastián.

Free entrance. Until full capacity.

Rickard Lindqvist is a Swedish designer dedicated to developing new foundations, theories and methods for pattern cutting. He studied Fashion Design and holds a PhD in fashion design from the Swedish School of Textiles, University of Boras. He is also the author of “Kinetic Garment Construction: Remarks on the Foundations of Pattern Cutting.” Trained in classic tailoring and pattern cutting techniques, and with an interest in opening new fields of creation in fashion, he has developed his research around the kinetic method and the creation of garments adapted to movement of the human body. He has provided his services as a consultant to clients including Vivienne Westwood and Nudie Jeans, among others. Between 2007 and 2011 he directed the brand bearing his own name, Rickard Lindqvist, and today he gives courses to present his innovative system.

The point is that the work of Rickard Lindqvist explores an alternative model to classic pattern design. Instead of a static matrix of a non-moving body, the kinetic model is a construction theory comprised of balance directions and key biomechanical points.  This is therefore a technique which seeks to find alternatives responding to the expressional and functional perspectives of garments and the bodies they are dressing, developed through concrete experiments by cutting and draping fabrics on live models.
