INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2025
Under the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”, International Museum Day 2025 invites museums to reimagine their role as essential connectors, innovators and guardians of cultural identity.
In an era marked by constant transformation, museums stand at the forefront of change, navigating a dynamic landscape shaped by shifting global events and evolving social needs. Museums serve as a vital medium for cultural exchange and enrichment, fostering mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among different communities.
This year’s theme also aligns with three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Museums support local economies by creating employment opportunities and offering educational programmes that empower communities.
The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum has a direct economic, social, cultural, and environmental impact on the surrounding area, as evidenced by the assessment carried out in 2021 coinciding with the museum’s 10th anniversary.
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – By encouraging creativity and embracing technological advances, museums drive innovation and enhance accessibility.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Museums contribute to sustainable urban development by serving as cultural hubs that promote the inclusion, resilience and preservation of cultural heritage.
For several years, the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum has been actively developing programmes to raise awareness and educate the public about responsible, sustainable, equitable and innovative fashion culture.
