THE GIVENCHIAGA FAMILY
«They are still more alike than unalike, more like each other than like anyone else. One is older, the other younger: they are still unmistakably the Givenchiaga family» The Observer, 28 August 1960.
The British journalist Katharine Whitehorn used the expression “The Givenchiaga Family” to highlight the connections she observed between the collections presented by Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972) and Hubert de Givenchy (1927–2018).
The stylistic affinity, close working relationship and personal friendship that bound the two creators together form the central theme of this exhibition, bringing their work into dialogue through an extended chronology spanning 1956 to 1972.
The exhibition also aims to pay tribute to Givenchy and to his outstanding role within the Givenchiaga family, not only as a designer but also as the guardian of the legacy of his friend and mentor, Cristóbal.
The exhibition will remain on view until 22 February 2027, coinciding with the centenary of Hubert de Givenchy’s birth.
