Exploring structural possibilities and contours, the student embarked on the design of the garment using the same techniques employed by Balenciaga to make his esteemed hat collections. By creating a mould that served as the starting point for the construction, the design came to life by bending and folding fabric on top to create this elegant, coherent sculpture that serves as a wearable, turquoise jacket.
The structure came together through the use of a plaster mould and the combining of thermoplastic materials, particularly worbla, and felt. The result is a three dimensional elegant structure, underscored by seamless details and a lack of interruptions or cuts. The exaggerated collar folds around the shoulders and back, bending and arcing to add depth and curvature. Leaving the arms exposed, the breast of the jacket drops down the sides of the body, which is flanked by fabric that encircles the hem and joins the curved back.
