The student delves into inspiration drawn from the colour black for this design, extending beyond the timeless allure of the colour to encompass the connotations associated with black. In their words, ''Black is the negation of light, black is darkness, evil, death, mourning, sadness, and the unknown, but black is also power and authority, and mystery''. Building upon this concept, the student explores structural possibilities, aiming to craft a design that maximises the play on shadows.
The clothing system the student has developed comprises 52 distinct components that harmonise to create a blazer dress. The lower part boasts 20 pleats, each uniquely shaped, that contribute to the central panel of the dress, creating light, shadow and layers of depth and dimension. Crafted from a textured wool fabric, and adorned with white threads to counterbalance the black, the material serves as a metaphorical canvas, symbolising the emergence of light from darkness.
