Coffee ground readings and fortune telling are the sources of inspiration for this design, that points to the hidden, mysterious and spiritual. The final look is a two-piece set—a gown and evening coat—made of a combination of navy blue wool, pleated taffeta, stamps of brown paint, weaving of black and royal blue threads, and white stitching details to create a play on texture, reflections and colours.
Draping down from the shoulders to the floor, concealing the silhouette of the body, the cloak falls and forms a balloon hem and a train. The fabric gathers, creating large pleats that add depths of light and shadow in the fabric. When moved the topcoat reveals the gown underneath, which extends out through the opening. Giving shape to the space between the body and the garment, the design alludes to the space occupied by the immaterial, the spiritual and the unknown that fortune telling encapsulates and the space it takes up in one’s life.
