Titled “The nature of Love”, this design evokes the harsh conclusion of the student: love is pain. With this notion in mind, and inspired by Richard Serra’s artworks, this piece dismantles and reshapes a common heart-shape to create an angular, pointed, black heart, entirely removed from its usual presentation and connotations. Pointed shoulders, a v neckline and a narrow-fitting skirt create the final silhouette.
This design forms a dichotomy of stiffness and fluidity, sheerness and opacity, brightness and darkness. Punctuated by exaggerated shoulders that extend out far past the model's form, the fabric wraps around the body forming a heart shape that narrows towards the waist and drops down to form a skirt, revealing the sheer black tulle that wraps around the rest of the piece from a distance. Free of boning and fusible fabric, the garment is carefully crafted to be light and comfortable, despite its rigid, angular appearance.
