Inspired by their travels through the mountains of Iceland, the student evokes the country's harsh elements and stark landscape with their sharp, warming jacket and trouser suit design. The tailoring of the wool suit pays homage to Balenciaga’s celebrated technical perfectionism, whilst the design blurs the liminality of control and the untamed nature of the outdoors through its asymmetrical, abstract form.
The student takes on complex tailoring, using few darts and focusing on the hidden structure of the garment: the “inside of the suit features all of the shaping techniques like pad stitching, applying horse hair, constructing shoulder pads and the top collar, which you can feel more on the outside rather than seeing it with your eye”. The back panel is designed in what they describe as the ‘structural wind blow’, which creates the illusion of movement and toys with the balance between structural severity and whimsy.
