Sofia Munk

The Royal Danish Academy
/ 2022—25

This piece is rooted in childhood memories spent by the ocean—moments of nature, warmth, and familiarity. Titled By the Seaside, the fabric features a nature-inspired motif, as integrated lines mark where shape has been added during the knitting process, referencing the organic patterns and textures from summers in West Sealand, Denmark. The garment wraps around the body, with one edge secured discreetly under the armhole by a string.

The design is constructed from a circular base using a technique the student developed called partial knit. Initially conceived as a method to create volume, it evolved into a foundational approach to pattern-making. The circular form and wraparound draping were guided by the material itself, allowing the fabric to dictate the silhouette with minimal intervention. In total, the piece required 6.5 hours of knitting and over 7,000 rows, resulting in a digitally knitted structure that spirals around the body—embracing it with softness and intention.
