This design explores denim manipulation through techniques such as controlled fraying and patchwork, transforming discarded materials into expressive, sculptural forms. The final piece is a voluminous wraparound cape, defined by its wide silhouette, clean straight lines, and a diagonal front opening that introduces asymmetry. Constructed from two overlapping layers of experimental denim, the design plays with texture and depth to create a modern interpretation of a classic silhouette.
The first layer features a patchwork of recycled denim squares, joined with exposed, frayed seams that emphasise the craftsmanship. The second layer consists of evenly spaced denim strips—frayed every 2 cm—to produce a fringe-like effect that adds movement and volume. The color palette celebrates the natural spectrum of denim, blending shades from pale washes to rich indigos, allowing the varied tones of repurposed fabric to be appreciated. The contrast of the upper and lower design is accentuated by the differing shades as well as texture.
