Inspired by Balenciaga’s Abstraction Coat, which appears to be made of one circle and two rectangles, this student tasked themselves to make a garment of four circles and a rectangle. In an avant-garde response to Balenciaga’s original design, the student created a gown and coat that create volumes around the body that centre around draping and geometry.

During the construction phase, the student gave themselves rules to experiment with shapes, manipulation and the silhouette: only use the geometric shapes from the toile research and only score circles and squares into card drapes. In order to further put shapes in the foreground, the fabrics’ final print is a halftone bitmap composed of circles, creating a gradient throughout. Using a black flock bitmap print in areas against a petrol blue fabric creates a particular emphasis of depth and shadow, adding to the geometry of the design.
