Hailing from a dystopian future, this design comprises a softened, romantic interpretation of a bullet vest and skirt, adorned with a metal crinoline that sits on top and encircles the bottom half. As the designer puts it, “in the dystopian future, garments serve as more than just a piece of fabric, they become powerful symbols reflecting the constraints, uniformity, and surveillance inherent in dystopian worlds”.
Rather than relying on rigid, resistant materials, the student chose light, soft fabrics for this design. The vest is crafted from muslin cotton, padding to enhance the shape and volumes, and leather edges and strap detailing. The skirt is form fitting in the front and voluminous in the back due to the padding and layers of tulle that create an expansive structure. A metal half-circle that sits atop the skirt, incorporating a dystopian element as it serves as both a protective layer and a bold design statement.
