This project is an amalgamation of the student’s interests, combining tailoring, Balenciaga’s techniques and the grotesque. The final tuxedo design plays on shapes and movement, inspired by Enrico Ferrarini’s sculptures in the pursuit of conveying movement in still objects.
By revealing rarely showcased areas of the male body, such as the neck, lower back, and midriff, the design deconstructs and reconstructs the classic suit, blending elegance with an exploration of unconventional shapes and fluidity.
The design was brought to life by creatively manipulating a blazer on a mannequin, particularly by dragging the neckline away from the neck to form a distinctive bump that contours to the body. A cummerbund holds the front of the jacket close, allowing the back to extend and create a hollow at the upper back. The trousers feature a raised front waist and a low back, with four darts at the back of each pant leg echoing the jacket’s shape. Each leg is adorned with folded satin that traces down to the hem.
