This project is an exploration of the preservation of history in times of crisis. Although fashion is not held of importance during wartime, clothes allow for the remembering of culture, traditions and ourselves, providing relief in times of pain and suffering. Sourcing inspiration from their homeland in Ukraine, the final design consists of four pieces: a top, corset, pants and hat that explore these themes.
The top consists of a white cotton base with a layer of pleated grey tulle and beige chiffon. The corset, made from sheer, lightweight fabric, reveals parts of the skin, highlighting the intricate beadwork. Digitally embroidered pieces on the sides of the corset are inspired by the student’s hometown in Ukraine. In contrast, the pants are crafted from heavy-weight, textured fabric with exposed frayed hems creating a spiral effect. The feather-covered face structure symbolises scars, while the elegant textiles represent healing.
