As part of the European Heritage Days on the theme ‘Heritage at Risk’, this tour is a unique opportunity to discover how items become part of the Museum collection, the conservation and display criteria, and the human and technical work needed to preserve and keep this textile legacy alive.

As part of the European Heritage Days and this year’s theme, ‘Heritage at Risk’, this tour reflects on the fragility and preservation of textile heritage through Cristóbal Balenciaga’s work.
From the time that the pieces left the vibrant activity of the ateliers and salons, Balenciaga’s designs ceased to only be garments to be worn and as fashion – fleeting by definition – to become heritage assets of extraordinary cultural, artistic and historical value.
The tour is a unique opportunity to follow the journey of an item from when it enters the Museum to preserving and displaying the garment. The public will thus learn about the item reception and deposit protocols, and the ethical and technical criteria applied for preventive conservation and restoration; along with the conditions needed to guarantee the correct preservation of delicate fabrics and materials that are particularly vulnerable to the passing of time.
The challenges facing museums today to protect the textile heritage will also be addressed: the deterioration of the materials, the risks to do with light, humidity or handling, and the constant need for research and specialist care.
The activity will provide insight to the invisible work of the conservators, restorers and technical teams to keep this legacy alive and ensure it is handed down to future generations. An invitation to understand that heritage conservation does not only entail storing objects, but also preserving memory and collective expertise.
