Or Shmueli

Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Arts
/ 2022—25

This dress is a tribute to the mantilla, the traditional black lace head covering worn in Spain. Drawing inspiration from this iconic textile and form, the student reimagined the fabric, transforming it into a modern, architectural design that conceals and reveals the body. The piece incorporates intentional cuts, bold volumes, and lace created with digital software, merging tradition with contemporary innovation.

The student began by crafting the silhouette with acrylic fibre, draping and darting it to create a flared shape that extends from the chest. The sleeves were given a dramatic form through the use of large darts at the sleeve's top. The fabric itself combines a high-synthetic content tailored fabric with a synthetic corset mesh, joined using double-sided interlining. The lace details were precision-cut using laser technology. The lining, made of blue wool, finishes the sleeves and neckline, while all finishing touches are hand-sewn.
