This project delves into the intricacies of memory and subtle details, paying tribute to the resilience and influence of strong women. Drawing inspiration from Balenciaga’s designs, Leigh’s art portraying the realities and perspectives of Black women, and the enduring strength of the designer's grandmother, the collection celebrates the power of Black women. Through structured shoulders, bold lines, and exaggerated shapes, the black-and-white woollen design accentuates the female form, embodying both strength and elegance.
The final design is a hybrid between a dress and a suit jacket. Crafted from black wool, it features white wool thread that forms pathways and highlights, creating the illusion of a corset that cinches the waist and extending to pattern the exaggerated balloon sleeves. The back mirrors the front of a suit jacket, leaving the back exposed while wrapping around to the front like an backwards lapel, reinterpreting the traditional silhouette.
