Candles served as inspiration for the silhouette; dried roses influenced the colours and texture. This design serves as a metaphor for the elements present at funerals and the drops of wax, resembling tears, falling from a lit candle. The dress translates the deeply rooted, ubiquitous fear of loss imprinted in culture, the refusal to accept loss as permanent and the way we transform death into another life stage.
The final design is a layered dress that appears as though it is melting to the floor. The inner dress provides structure to the outer layer, made from 100% cotton for durability. The student mixed cyan and magenta for the silk painting, applying the colours to pre-cut fabric. Water was used to create a gradient effect over the shantung. Finally, the shantung was submerged in a yellow and brown solution to set the colours of the dried flowers.
