This design draws inspiration from spiral sculptures; on the inside and the outside of a single object. The student’s understanding is that the garment plays this same role on the body as it becomes an extension of our skin, a protective layer and a reflection of how we are feeling. Incorporating these ideas, the final design is a uniquely shaped jacket that encircles the body purposefully.
Starting from the concept of the inner and the outer, the student explored the placement and scale of an exaggerated sleeved jacket that opens at the front and creates a ring around the arms, neck and shoulders. The student first created a model in the desired shape to which they added a tulle ruffle, which was later covered in black fabric. They used shoulder pads for added volume that extend into an overarching collar, mimicking the design of a spiral sculpture and enveloping the body.
