The Cristóbal Balenciaga Foundation is a public sector body constituted on 7 October 1999 and recorded in the Register of Foundations in the Basque Country on 27 November 2000. The Spanish State is present in the Foundation through the Ministry of Culture, the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Getaria Town Council.
The Foundation has the mission to promote, develop and publicise the enormous importance of the figure and work of the couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizagirre in the world of fashion and particularly haute couture, and in artistic creation in general.
Its main vehicle for implementing this mission is the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum where apparel and documentation related to the author and his time are safeguarded, preserved, documented, researched and brought to public attention.
The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum opened to the public on 11 June 2011, in Getaria. It is also recorded in the Register of Museums in the Basque Country.
The Foundation is governed by its articles of association, amended for the last time on 9 February 2012 and by the applicable legal provisions, among which are Law 9/2016, of 2 June, on Foundations in the Basque Country, and Law 7/2006, of 1 December, on Museums in the Basque Country (pdf, 97,79 kB). As far as budgets and accounting are concerned, the applicable laws are General Budget Act 47/2003, of 26 November and Royal Decree 1491/2011 of 24 October approving the Rules of Adaptation of the General Accounting Plan to Non-profit Organisations. As far as administrative procurement is concerned, it is governed by the Consolidated Text of the Law on Public Sector Contracts, approved by Legislative Royal Decree 3/2011 of 14 November, in the aspects applicable to its condition of granting authority in regard to contracts signed and to its own internal contracting instructions.
