Balenciaga opened his first haute couture atelier in 1917, when he was just 22 years old. It was the beginning of an intense period of activity that resulted in the inauguration of several couture houses in San Sebastian, Madrid and Barcelona before he established himself in Paris in 1936. He enjoyed immediate and unquestionable success with customers, critics and fashion editors, who all applauded the couturier for his elegant simplicity and exquisite stitching, with a subtle and recurring reference to, and reinterpretation of, his native culture.
